PISCES launches interactive map of the Celtic Sea
14 June 2010
The PISCES team have launched a pilot map to enable our stakeholders to share knowledge about their sector operating in the Celtic Sea.
By better understanding the wide range of activities in the Celtic Sea and exploring the interactions between different users, our stakeholders will be able to develop guidelines that are sensitive to both economic and environmental needs.
But sharing complex information across a wide variety of sectors and multiple countries is a challenge! This interactive mapping tool will allow stakeholders to upload environmental data or information on activities they know occur in the region. As the project progresses, this map will grow, providing increasing clarity on human activity in the Celtic Sea.
This map has recently been launched with basic data and we’ll be gathering information from stakeholders over the course of the next two years.
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is using the same technology for mapping activities in the marine environment for the UK. PISCES has adopted a mapping tool which is compatible with other projects to enable a cross-sharing of information and a strategy will be put in place to ensure that anything we gather remains accessible and useful to people after the life of the project.
This map has been developed by exeGesIS which specialises in spatial data management.
