Reflections on Change

This series of films showcases practical examples of environmental management projects in France, Scotland, England and the USA. This range of stakeholder-led projects shows how collaboration makes a real difference and shapes the outcomes to benefit both the environment and people. Each case study is shown through the eyes of a stakeholder who describes their experience of making their voice heard and gives an idea of what can be achieved by working together.

We hope these short films will help to inspire people to get involved and reveal both the challenges and rewards!

Stakeholder Case Study 1 - Severn Estuary Partnership, UK

Detailing the Severn Estuary Partnership from a recreational Yachtsman’s point of view, this film reveals the benefits of bringing different stakeholders to the table to manage the activities in the water between Wales and England. Don Sutherland talks about his 10-year involvement in this valuable stakeholder engagement project.

Stakeholder Case Study 2 - Pescatourism, France

Artisanal fishermen from the VAR region of France have established a tourist initiative to show members of the public the traditional art of small-scale fishing. This creative diversification allows fisherman to positively promote their work and reduces the pressure on fish stocks in the region. The close collaboration between local stakeholders of this project and the French administration resulted in amendments to French legislation to add this new activity and take account of the small boats of the Var region.

Stakeholder Case Study 3 - WWF Freshwater Trout Aquaculture Dialogue, Scotland

Focusing on a stakeholder initiative with WWF, David Bassett from the British Trout Association in Scotland highlights the importance of representing British trout farmers in a variety of projects. This dialogue allows their work to be understood and accurately represented in national and international forums.

Stakeholder Case Study 4 - Port Orford Ocean Resources Team, USA

This film tells the story of commercial fishermen in Port Orford, Oregon, USA – where and how they fish, what they do to protect their ocean to sustain the fisheries into the future. They are working together to propose fishery management from the bottom-up, to develop it locally, based on local science, local knowledge and collaboration with other ocean users.

Views on Stakeholder Engagement from a Marine Spatial Planning Perspective

Heather Ritchie, LLB. MSc, from the School of the Built Environment at the University of Ulster explains her research on the views of stakeholder engagement in relation to Spatial Planning in the marine environment. Originally presented at the PISCES Workshop II in Cork, Heather discusses the involvement of stakeholders in the Irish Sea region.

Netgains - Solutions for Sustainable fishing in the EU

WWF-Spain identified an area of the coast of Galicia, North West Spain in need of protection. It is a region where fishing is strongly depended on, with over 55,000 people employed in the marine environment. WWF helped to create the first ever fishing reserve in Lira. It is important to manage the area to protect the marine ecosystem and people living in coastal regions.
